Our new Guild Spotlight features a guild that enjoys lively text chat.
In today's Guild Spotlight, members of the French-speaking guild The Impaling Unicorns answer our questions and introduce themselves. The guild offers a ton of events for everyone, while having a lot of fun and keeping a healthy atmosphere!
Do you think your guild should be next under the spotlight? Simply answer our questions—or even your own— in this discussion, add some nice screen shots, and you might see your own guild featured two weeks from now!
The Impaling Unicorns
What is your guild's name? Does that name have a special history or significance?
Our guild's name came from a joke about the reason why one shouldn't try to ride a unicorn. This obsession originated with the unicorn in Oblivion, which was a wee bit skittish. Actually, this very unicorn is displayed on our logo.
When was your guild formed? Tell us the story of how the guild came to be.
Our guild was created some several million years ago. Since then, we've had access to a technology allowing us to dwell into the universe of video games and the Internet.
More seriously, we're a very young guild, founded just before
ESOTU's launch. At first, we were only three anxious people scared of hosting anyone else, and then eventually... We became a legion.
Which alliance has your guild sworn fealty to?
We belong to the Aldmeri Dominion, the dominion of Elves and fur balls, where the air is always springlike and cat grass tender.
Why did you choose that alliance?
We like trees and skooma; we're too squeamish for Ebonheart, and too delicate for Daggerfall.
How many members does your guild currently have?
Currently, our guild amounts to slightly more than 80 members. We try to stabilize the amount of active players so as to keep a friendly side, but still have enough people to organize outings.
Does your guild have a website?
licornesempaleuses.clicforum.fr/index.php
We have a forum and an event organizational tool where we organize our outings and chat about the game or some other... various topics, like the addiction issues among the Khajiit, the color of the sky, the fish, or even the reproduction mode among Pokemon.
What times and days is the guild most active?
Some members are early birds, some night owls, but the guild usually goes crazy around 9PM when the outings are non-stop.
What languages or countries do your members span?
We come from exotic countries like France or Belgium, and even Australia! But we're willing to welcome people from less hostile lands.
What activities in ESOTU do your members enjoy doing together most?
Dungeons, and trying to take farms in Cyrodiil. We love farms. We sometimes have a picnic there. As we're not vocal, I tend to quickly write "la ferme" ("the farm", but also "shut it" in French) in the chat channel so as to indicate we should go there quickly, and I'm always answered "toi-même" ("same to you"). I've never quite understood why. The unicorns are some mysterious players.
What does your guild focus on in-game? Do your members prefer delving dungeons together, fighting for keeps in Cyrodiil, roleplaying in the taverns, crafting and trading, or a combination?
We like wandering in Cyrodiil, and regularly organize small sessions to do so. It's hilarious to believe we are all stealthy, as we are four low-level characters, surrounded by 10 veteran foes... Trust me! We try to apply the /playdead method as best as we can.
We also like everything else, of course, but the /playdead method hasn't worked in dungeons yet, nor during the Trials. That's terrible.
What makes your guild unique?
Our guild is unique, because it's beautiful... Well, actually, everyone thinks we're an eccentric bunch because we pledge a 100% no-voice approach. Thus, we have a very, very animated guild chat channel.
Is your guild part of a greater alliance of guilds? Why did you join them?
We're rather famous among the other guilds; they run after us, as the power of a unicorn is very attractive.
Our guild joined TESO-Event, aka the Adeptes de Shéogorath (Sheogorath's cultists). We're quite fond of all kinds of games and duels in Cyrodiil, so we feel like little unicorns on their rainbow there (small fish in an ocean wasn't quite right).
Does your guild run particular events? If it does, let us know!
We regularly organize Strange Games. One of them, last summer, was the Interlicornes (Interunicorns), an event sponsored by Saint Guylux and Saint Léonzitrone. Daedra d'Li had to activate their powers by the Force of the Unicorns by returning the appearance of Jammie's head back to normal. It didn't work; she's still got this weird head of hers, but we had a lot of fun.
After that, we organized other games with the Cultists and all kinds of Daedra, but if you want to know more about it, go and take a look (not too many, or there will be none left) at:

What is your favourite or most memorable moment as a guild so far in ESOTU?
I have a lot of good memories. The best one may have been when we had our first candidate apply to our guild - my co-GM and I breathed a huge sigh of relief. And then everything went very fast.
Does your guild secretly (or not so secretly) follow a specific Daedric Prince? If so, which one?
My co-GM is a follower of Sheogorath, as many other Unicorns are. I personally prefer Daedra Gibus.
We also have other Daedra, always ready to play tricks on us... Daedra Cula, Daedra Gueuse, the list goes on. Actually, even I don't know them all yet. We've even had Steven Seagaltmer himself visiting! He's no Daedra, but we can still worship him, can't we?
After a long day of adventuring, where does your guild enjoy gathering to wind down?
After a long day of grass-rolling adventures, we like putting all our findings in the guild bank, and then a big – very big – huge cleaning needs to be done to remove all the fish. We wind down reading the co-GM complaining, "WHO THE HELL PUT FISH INTO THE BANK AGAIN?!"
Tell us five fun facts about your guild.
- Once, we had this turned-down applicant who was so eager to join us that he applied again, under another name, with another personality...
- Way before the game launched, we had wanted to change the color of the forum. I carried out a survey suggesting green, beige or pink. Beige won. But since then, a ruthless internal war has raged in which everyone raises their favourite color high on their standard. If a Unicorn ever starts talking to you about colors, flee.
- As I said before, we've had an issue with fish. Our co-GM was regularly in charge of cleaning the guild bank. We were asking members not to put items like fish (trophies) into it so as not to block it. I have to say, this was before the Saint Perfect Roe. And one day, he found a... a fish... It became a game: we would deposit a fish, or any item of this kind, and bet on which cuss words the co-GM would write on the guild channel. No one has ever won. But the fish became a prize given back to the winners of one of our Strange Games. They were very happy about it.
- During our first trip to Cyrodiil, we were very disorganized and the Unicorns, being a bit loony, started to wander everywhere. I was trying to lead the group as best as I could, being a Wandering Unicorn myself. So my group and I ended up doing a big round dance. I was trying to catch up with the end of the line while the first in the line was trying to catch up with me. It lasted quite some time before we noticed that we were running in circles. Since then, we've been much better organized!
- Once, I saw a member of my group jumping on a chest in a dungeon like a dog on a bone. He stumbled and ended up 10 meters below. That happens, especially because Unicorns - being very polite and keen on sharing - we quite often tend to jump rabbit-like in front of chests not daring to open them... But that's only because we love sharing.
- We also have this tradition of inventing achievements. If one day you're being urged, "Come on, I'm telling you, if you jump down this chasm there, you'll be rewarded 50 achievement points and a special title!" be wary. But then, we've developed this art so as to be totally undetectable, so you'll probably be tricked anyway.
Right, that is more than five. But Unicorns can't count yet.
We've recorded a nice video to introduce the Unicorns, and it needs to be noted that without voice chat, it is quite complicated to synchronize the emotes. But we had a ton of fun doing that, especially when we killed all the NPCs to have some room (may they rest in peace, they died for a good cause).
If people are interested in joining your guild, who should they contact?
The candidate needs to apply on the forum so that all the Unicorns can meet them, and ask them riddles and questions about colors.
